A social layer for the physical world

Who’s around.

The question no other app answers: who is around me right now, and would any of them want to meet? Open near and you're looking at where you are — the people who are open, the places around you, what's on tonight, and the notes people left where they wrote them.

Four marks

Everything on the map is one of four marks — no pins. The nearer something is, the darker it's drawn.

What it isn't

Not another social network. Not another dating app. Not another location app.

It sits where the three overlap, and the promise is the thing none of them offer: there are interesting people around you, and now there's a way to meet them. It isn't trying to replace real-world interaction. It's trying to make it easier to start.

Three distances

The whole product is organised by three distances. Scroll, and the ring grows — the nearer something is, the darker it's drawn.

Here

The room you're in — who's open, what's been written here, what this place is like right now.

you could walk over right now
Around

The next few streets — other places, the people in them, what's happening tonight.

you could be there in five minutes
Near

The neighbourhood — quieter, wider, more about what's around than who's around. Events this week, places worth knowing.

it's part of where you live
TONIGHT 1.1 KM AROUND · 400 M N 200 M

If Here is empty, Around isn't. The map keeps going.

The first move

A wave says I'd be up for meeting — and costs almost nothing.

OpenYou're open unless you turn it off: people at the places near you can see you're at the café, and can wave. You wave back and a chat opens. If you don't, nothing happens — and nobody is told.

Drawn, not trackedPeople sit on venues, not points. near knows which café you're in and nothing finer than that — no precise positions, no paths, no "last seen". Off is one tap: you vanish from every map, nothing is kept.
